Sea Sisters Sri Lanka
SeaSisters is a non-profit organisation in Sri Lanka, empowering local women and girls through swimming and surfing since 2018. Through our programs, we foster women’s empowerment, ocean connection and environmental awareness.
In Sri Lanka, local women and girls are hardly seen in the ocean. Despite growing up on an island, most Sri Lankan women have never learnt how to swim and thus, fear the ocean. This is the result of traditional gender norms and cultural expectations that have prevented the ocean from being ‘an accepted space’ for women.
Particularly in rural areas, women and girls are often expected to stay at home and take care of their families, excluding them from the recreational and economic opportunities of surfing and surf tourism.
We believe that the ocean is for everybody. We also believe that the ocean has the power to transform and connect – and that a healthy ocean means healthy people.
