Don’t get us wrong. We love surfing, paddle to the wave and have the indescribable feeling of gliding through nature itself in movement.
We want of course everyone to experience this as well, but not at any price.
The natural world is seriously endangered.
We are about to reach points of no return in which ecosystem services are/will be lost forever.
Together with plastic pollution, corals disappearing due to climate change. Coast areas being lost as the sea level increases. We can’t close our eyes anymore.
That’s why in 2020 we stepped forward and made serious changes in the way we do “business” and teach surfing.
We aim to be environmentally sustainable and minimize as much as we possibly can.
Minimizing the harm that our activity causes to nature. We aim to be active agents of change within our community and raise awareness for those visiting us.
Reminding everyone how important it is that they too contribute to a more ecological world.
22 years have gone by since Future was first founded.
Since then many things have changed as in 1998 there were only a few surf schools, a couple of certified coaches, and a few surf business “dudes”.
We were surfers with a huge desire to be close to the sea. We loved it so much. Little by little, often without realizing it, many of us started making a career out of Surf as professional competitors, commercial representatives, and managers.
We were flowing with a movement much bigger than ourselves – the world’s growing passion for Surf as a sport and as a lifestyle.
Over the years, Surf went from being a radical sport practised by a few (often even tagged as rebels or even delinquents) to an Olympic Sport and a valuable industry at the level of so many other substantial financial influent sports, that a couple of years ago would be considered as unreachable regarding media coverage and economics.
In short just like Surf and the world around us, our surf school has grown considerably as well. Since 1998 following this quick international expansion of the surfing phenomenon.
Working with local kids and world-traveling tourists
When we started, we worked exclusively with local children – some of them have become our trainers. Many of them got (and they keep getting) to the most prestigious national competitions and oftentimes brought/bring trophies back home.
A few years later we started working with tourists from all over the world, and thanks to our professionalism and the quality of our classes, we have ensured a growing flow of clients throughout the year, and more importantly, we have gained several “clients” who have become our friends and who invariably visit us every year.
Fun and good work build a solid business
Like the world around us, we as well have become more complex.
As we adapted to a new dimension and reality, where the rules and limitations in the surf world were changing rapidly, the initial authenticity faded.
Our “no big expectations” surf adventure on the surf economy became a proper business with responsibilities and goals to achieve in order to guarantee sustainability… just like any other business.
Like children who begin to lose their innocence and connection to their purest self, we too have put off reflecting on the greater purpose behind the art of surfing. Somehow we have neglected to honour and appreciate the nature that gives us the opportunity to earn a living while enjoying an unparalleled lifestyle.
Our values
We want to help make the world a better place and create a more just, balanced and conscious society. We believe that there is no better way to do this than by calling for a stronger connection between people and nature.
What better way to connect people with their inner joy and nature than to teach them how to surf? Surfing is more than just a sport. It is an experience that reminds us right at the beginning that we are a small drop of water in a huge ocean, but an essential piece in the giant puzzle that is life.
We often forget what it takes to grow the food we eat, the clothes we wear or the smartphones we use, which leads to ecological devastation. Surfing reminds us right here that we depend on the conditions that nature offers us.
We want to help people be more connected with (their true) nature. Surf is a perfect way of doing this. But not the only one. That’s why we are also integrating practices like yoga into our core activities.
The cornerstones guiding our work and helping us making business decisions:
