7 good habbits to stay fit in between swells
Surfing is a very physical sport so for this reason you have to keep yourself fit even in between swells when the ocean goes flat we must do the work to be ready to rumble. Lucky that there are many ways to be surf fit and in this article we are introducing you to a few of them.
1. Follow a healthy diet
It is not a coincidence that we started with the diet, because literally what we eat that becomes our body and if we want to have this body functioning well between the most tough conditions too, we need to consume food consciously. Making fruits and vegetables the focal point of every meal will help you meet your recommended amount each day. Fill half of your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables to make sure you get the right amount of vitamins and nutritions. Also make sure that you hydrate yourself and drink lots of water during the day.
2. Start to do breathing sessions
During surfing, your muscles have to work harder, which increases their demand for oxygen. For this reason you should pick up the habit of doing breathing exercises as part of your workout routine. This will increase the amount of oxygen in your blood, reduce your blood pressure and help you to stay relaxed after a bigger wipeout.
3. Stretching, flexibility training
Since we need to be flexible during our pop up and maneuvers is recommended to stretch our muscles. To help the process you can attend a few yoga classes or just follow a guided video with a professional trainer. It is also good to develop a morning routine which includes a few stretches so you will always be more energized at the start of your day.
4. Start to exercise
For surfing you will definitely need strength , especially when there is no swell hitting the coast you will need to work out. This you can do in the gym with weights and machines but if you do not have the availability it is also good enough to do push ups, pull ups, core and ab workout at home.
5. Do cardio training
To stay fit and be able to catch the best waves, we need to improve our stamina and according to our height keep our weight on an optimal level. There are many options to do cardio workouts such as swimming, running, cycling, hiking, dancing or even kickboxing just choose the one that brings joy to your life and enjoy the benefits during your session.
6. Maintain your style, introduce yourself to skate
If there are no waves out there you can make the waves on land , that is the reason why people invented skating and this helps a lot with your surfing style especially in the case of surf skating. Meanwhile you work on your turns, pay attention to how your body weight moves from front to backfoot. Be aware of your hands ,always keep them up. Always keep a low body posture.
7. Maintain your balance, introduce yourself to slackline
To be solid on your board and be focused is one of the main requirements if you want to become a decent surfer. I found it very helpful to practice slackline for this reason. Your focus is always at one point ahead of you what helps to stay present and focus on your next step just like surfing.
